VISION
A world in which all deafblind children and adults can become active members of the society

MISSION
To work in partnership with others – deafblind people, their families, carers and professional – to ensure that everyone facing challenges because of deafblindness has access to advice, opportunities and support.

1999 – The Education Programme begins: the first 2 education units for 8 deafblind children were created.
2000 – The first Romanian teachers attend Professional Development Programmes in UK.
2001 – SI(R) is officially established as a Romanian non-governmental organization and signs the first partnership agreement with the Romanian Ministry of Education.
2002 – SI(R) trains 30 special education teachers to work with deafblind children. The teachers network is established. Since then, teachers have been meeting twice a year, every year.
2004 – SI(R) signs the second partnership agreement with the Romanian Ministry of Education. More Romanian teachers attend Professional Development Programmes in UK.
2005 – SI(R) trains another 30 special education teachers to work with deafblind children.
2006 – There are 13 deafblind units with 52 children. SI(R) trains 11 National Trainers in deafblindness. Romanian legislation recognizes deafblindness as a distinct disability (Law 448/2006).
2007 – There are 17 deafblind units with 68 children. The Early Intervention programme begins in Bucharest, and then in Oradea.
2008 – SI(R) supports the development of the first Curriculum for Deafblind/MSI children. There are 19 deafblind units with 81 children, in 11 special schools all over Romania.
2009 – There are 33 deafblind units with 134 children, in 15 special schools all over Romania. SI(R) trains another 25 special education teachers to work with deafblind children. SI(R) signs the third partnership agreement with the Romanian Ministry of Education. SI(R) receives the Recognition Award and the Practitioners’ Award during the ERSTE Foundation Awards for Social Integration. The Early Intervention programme is extended in Timisoara.
2010 – There are 35 deafblind units with 140 children, in 16 special schools all over Romania.
